15 Characteristics of Servant Leadership

by Dave Brock/ November 15, 2016

In a world where the type of leader we are defines us, it is important we seek to become the best leader we can bea servant leader.  In their book Inside Out, Rich and Robyn Wilkerson perfectly balance the concept of a simple read with maximum effectiveness on servant leadership and what this principle can look like.

Servant leadership is defined as being somebody who responds to needs, who forms and manages partnerships to meet those needs, and who prays. When these actions are broken down, we discover the characteristics of a servant leader. Inside Out lists these 15 characteristics of a servant leader, and I quote:

  • They have a clear vision.
  • They have absolute values.
  • They are faithful.
  • They are accepting.
  • They are loyal.
  • They are humble.
  • They have integrity.
  • They are compassionate.
  • They are encouragers. They support one another.
  • They are generous.
  • They honor and respect one another. They value the contributions of others.
  • They mentor one another.
  • They are flexible.
  • They “bounce back.” They are resilient, and they help others to bounce back.
  • They are selfless. They are willing to give it their all.

The Wilkersons also include many stories of leaders in the Bible, throughout history, and people they have encountered in their own lives, and how becoming a servant leader influenced their ability to lead in their present situations.

Inside Out culminates when the concept of mentoring and coaching other leaders is explored. It takes the book from bettering one’s self to influencing the next generation of leaders. It encourages leaders to build on these characteristics and challenges them to be an even stronger and more effective leader than they are.

Christian and non-Christian leaders alike will benefit from the wisdom provided in Inside Out. The Wilkersons wrote Inside Out in a way that even leaders who do not claim to be Christians can read it and feel valued in their differences while understanding and learning the intended concepts within its covers.

Servant leadership is a leadership trait that does not come easily to every person but is proven to be essential for a truly effective leader who desires to leave a positive legacy. Whether this is new territory for you or you are simply looking to refine and grow yourself in this area, then Inside Out is a book to add to your library.
