Margin in Your Life

A simple formula to create space to think, learn, and grow.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”  —Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Is it just me or does our society seem busier than ever? We wake up, start our daily routine, head to work with the radio on to catch up on the latest news, check e-mail, start our work day, meet at Panera for our lunch meeting, check e-mail, finish up our work, head home, eat dinner, check e-mail, turn on the TV, and fall asleep—just to do it all over again tomorrow.

And yet, our God created us to rest, reflect, and be still.

Over the past week, we’ve been discussing some practical ways to create more margin in our lives as kids’ ministry leaders. Today, I wanted to take some time to share a simple formula to consider.

A Simple Formula to Create Space to Think, Learn, and Grow

Life can be incredibly hectic and stressful. If we want to continue to grow, it is important to take some time to intentionally be still.

As we consider how to create more margin in our lives, here’s a simple formula to consider.

  • One hour a day

  • One day a month

  • One week a year

I know right now you’re probably thinking, “Mark, that’s impossible. There’s no way I can do that with my current schedule.” To that I would say, try it.

Take some time this week to look at your calendar between now and the end of the year. Intentionally set aside time one hour a day and one day a month between now and the rest of the year. If you have capacity to add a week, do it. If not, make sure it’s on your calendar for next year.

Margin is not something that just happens. You have to fight for it. My hope is that this simple formula can help you take steps towards creating more margin in your life so you can become the type of leader God desires.
