Teaching Kids to Walk by the Word and the Spirit

Three basics

by Mark Entzminger/ September 26, 2015

Teaching kids to embrace the Holy Spirits presence in their lives is an important part of helping them grow as healthy disciples. Earlier this week, we discussed the idea that the Word and the Spirit are inseparable when it comes to knowing Jesus and following Him.

As kids ministry leaders, we have this challenge:
Every generation needs a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Therefore it is critical that today
s kids learn how to live and walk by the Spirit.

How do we do that? A few months ago, I had the opportunity to speak with childrens ministry leaders from around the globe at the Empowered21 Global Congress in Jerusalem. Here were three ideas I shared to help them implement the idea of teaching kids to walk by the Word and the Spirit in their ministries.

Three Ways to Teach Kids to Walk by the Word and the Spirit

Here are three ways you can empower kids in your ministry to embrace the Word and the Holy Spirit in their discipleship journey:

1. Be a living example of what it means to be saturated in the Word of God and the Spirit of God. One of the best ways to show kids the inseparable nature of the Word and the Spirit is through prayer. Pray in the Spirit. At the same time, find ways to claim the promises of God we see throughout Scripture in your prayer. This is a great way to help kids see how the Word and the Holy Spirit are two sides of the same coin that is walking with God.

2. Teach kids that the Word and the Holy Spirit help us share the gospel with people who need it. The Spirit helps us find ways to go to the lost and hurting to share the Word. Once our friends hear the Word, it is the Holy Spirit who helps him or her grow and is constantly working and drawing them to himself.

3. Remember, there is a difference in knowing about the Word and the Holy Spirit and in truly knowing them. Kids are starving for relationship today. Sometimes they will say they know and believe simply to receive approval from adults they admire. Dont stop short on teaching them about the Word and the Holy Spirit. Lead them to believe it. It starts by teaching them the relationship between the Word and the Spirit. Sometimes that means asking the tough questions.

What are some ways you teach kids to recognize the Holy Spirits presence in their lives and embrace it as an important part of the relationship with God?
