It shouldn’t be a secret: your leaders need to feel appreciated! When you’re adding kids and losing leaders, this is a recipe for disaster. This children’s pastor realized something needed to change. He was beginning to doubt his abilities. Worse yet, he started to doubt his calling into the ministry. “My problem was, I was so focused on adding new volunteers that I didn’t give much thought to the ones who were already committed, already trained, and already serving in the trenches.
Volunteers are one of the most valuable resources within any organization. This is true whether it is the local church, district or the national office. They are people who care and choose to serve beyond their normal responsibilities. Since volunteers are a gift from God and the engine that moves ministries forward, leaders need to honor their service by intentionally protecting them from burnout.
A good friend of mine shared a story about when he was praying for an increase in his ministry. He heard God ask him, “What are you doing with what I’ve already given you?” If we faithfully steward the volunteers God has entrusted us with, He will meet and exceed our needs! In order for God to do His part, we have to make sure we are doing our part first.
Just the other day in a staff meeting, my pastor reminded our team of the power of recognizing someone by their name. He pointed out that in Romans chapter 16, Paul ends his letter in a very unusual way. After he concludes chapter 15 with a normal “the God of peace be with you,” he proceeds to add one more chapter where he lists more than 30 of his “co-laborers” in the gospel.
